Shopkeeper, Watersfield, near Coldwaltham during the early years of the last century. Unsted ran the small village shop, selling groceries and drapery. In addition, he published a dozen or more collotype views of Watersfield, which are marked "Photo. Searle. Watersfield" at the bottom right, but have Unsted's name printed on the card backs. Similar cards were issued by other shopkeepers in Bignor and Plaistow showing their villages.

The 1911 census records that Unsted had been born at Wilmington in present day East Sussex in about 1857. His wife, Isabel Unsted, was two years older and came from Brighton. There were no children from the marriage.
